Wine farms: Helderberg and Somerset West

Child-friendly wine farms in Somerset West and Helderberg

As an Aunt, I sometimes have the privilege to look after my two nieces, and we always have the problem of deciding what to do, besides pay a visit to MacD’s. Since summer is nearly over I was thinking of places we could visit and enjoy outside in the open air, before the cold weather sets in. Wine farms usually boast with beautiful views, open spaces for the kids to run around in and wine tasting for the adults, but what activities are there for the kids to do?

In my search, I found a fantastic idea that is being offered at a few wine farms. Wine tasting for the adults and, I thought this was cute, juice tasting for the kids. Middelvlei Wine Estate, which is located in Flamingo road in Stellenbosch, offers kiddies juice tastings, where they can taste different kinds of juice and pair them with a selection of sweets. The cost of the juice tasting is R45 per child. There is a place for them to play and feed the farm animals. The Estate also has a wonderful family Boerebraai where they have their very own resident braai expert to prepare your chops or chicken sosaties while you enjoy that special bottle of wine. The cost of the braai is R165 per person and booking is essential at the time of publishing this post.

More wine tasting and then juice pairing for kids

I went ahead and found three other wine farms which also offer the juice tasting experience for children: Spier, which is also known for their eagle encounters; Lanzerac which offers a red Grapetizer to taste and is accompanied by three chocolates to eat. Lourensford offers a market, restaurant with play area, lush lawns and a juice and chocolate pairing.

A second location I stumbled upon was Stables @ Vergelegen located on Lourensford Road in Somerset West, where there is good food to be had, a jungle gym and great children’s play area. There is also a fun vine maze the kids can play in. The Estate is rather large with beautiful scenery and gardens. While you are there and if you have enough time, you can find and wander around in their 18 formal gardens. The Estate is open from Monday to Sunday from 09:00 to 17:00 and entrance to the property were R10 for adults.

So if you find yourself not knowing what to do with yourself and your family on a sunny Sunday afternoon, head out to one of these beautiful wine farms where the whole family can enjoy their day out.

Charlene
