Fun food for kids

I know my two nieces are sometimes a problem when coming to eat their food; especially if it's healthy food, I think sweets would be their staple diet if allowed to their own devices. I did some research and found some easy fun food ideas for kids. These are quite simple because you don’t want to have to go to too much trouble to prepare it. The kids can help out in all of these ideas, which should make them want to eat the finished product all the more, hopefully!

Teddy Bear toast

One cannot get any simpler fun food idea than this. All you need is:

  • A slice of toast

  • Cut up round banana pieces

  • Raisins and/or peanuts

First, apply some of the peanut butter to the toast; I like mine nice and thick. Place the round pieces of banana in the correct places on the toast to represent the ears and mouth. Now place the raisins or peanuts in the position for eyes and the nose. Voila, the cutest teddy bear toast that your child will hopefully gobble up.

Food car

I thought this was too cute and easy to make. The cars can be made of fruit like bananas or apples, but also with vegetables like carrots. I used the following for my piece de resistance:

  • Whole Banana

  • Slices of Strawberries

  • Pretzels

  • I used a jelly baby for the driver for variety

  • Toothpicks

First, cut the ends off the banana and then use the toothpicks to attach the slices of strawberry to the banana. Stick a pretzel in the front of the banana on top for the steering wheel and the jelly baby behind as the driver. Maybe playing with their food a little is not out of the questions this time, as long as it’s all eaten up in the end.

Mini Pizzas

This is super easy because I bought the mini pizza bases at the store, of course, you can make your own if you would like to.

You will need:

  • Pizza bases –mini

  • Toppings of your choice, I used onions, green pepper, bacon, and cheese

The kids can help to put their choice of toppings onto the pizza and bake in the oven for a few minutes. You can make fancy faces on the pizza, but I think it doesn’t really matter in this case, it’s pizza; the kids will eat it anyway. The size of the pizza is really nice, not too big so you can’t eat too much. Yum!

Final fun food idea: Crumpet pops

I love these and make them quite often; the recipe I use is easy to follow and comes out great every time. You will need:

  • Big flat pan

  • I used wooden kebab sticks or lollipop sticks

  • Recipe for crumpets

Recipe:

  • 2 extra-large eggs

  • 30ml sugar

  • 250ml cake flour

  • Teaspoon baking powder

  • Pinch of salt

  • 125ml milk

  • 30ml melted butter or margarine

  • Oil for frying

Beat eggs and sugar together; sift flour, baking powder, and salt and add to the egg mixture. Add milk and melted butter and mix well. You can add a little more milk if necessary, just until the mixture is not too thick or too runny. Place spoonful’s of batter onto the heated pan and carefully put the stick into the batter until it is covered. Wait until the mixture starts to bubble and turn over. I found the crumpets to be quite sturdy on the stick and easy to handle. While still warm dip into some maple syrup and enjoy. You can use this idea at parties, showers or just enjoy with the family.
