Family Friendly Safari Fun at Rhino River Lodge, South Africa

Are we there yet?” For parents, this is the dreaded question that almost always precedes a fantastic family holiday.

Excited to be doing something different and impatient to arrive, children can be a challenge to travel with. However, when done right, it is oh-so-rewarding. For many of us, the memories of going on family holidays as a child are ones that we will cherish forever, and as parents, this is something that we want to be able to give our kids.

The biggest problem that many parents are faced with when organising a family trip, is finding that perfect (and affordable) family-friendly destination that balances your own enjoyment and comfort, with your kids’. Set in the heart of the wildly beautiful Zululand Rhino Reserve, Rhino River Lodge is one of those ‘precious gems’ when it comes to safari lodges and welcomes families with open-arms. Owner and manager team, Dale and Shannon Airton, are parents themselves and as a result, understand the unique challenges and requirements that come with travelling with children.

Where to stay?

Rhino River Lodge has two lovely free-standing bush homes that can each comfortably accommodate up to four people, making it perfect for a small family. The Cottage is a traditionally thatched cottage with two en-suite bedrooms, a cozy lounge and dining room area, as well as a fully functional kitchen. There is also a covered veranda and private pool where parents can watch their children swimming while enjoying spectacular views of the Msunduze River.

Alternatively, families can stay at Rhino River Lodge's exclusive Homestead. This contemporary two-bedroom house is designed to take full advantage of the pristine views of the bushveld. The spacious lounge opens onto a large deck with a private plunge pool. All the accommodation is also equipped with air conditioners and ceiling fans to help beat the South African heat, as well as fully stocked mini bar fridges and tea/coffee making facilities.

Activities, adventures and excursions

Daily activities at the lodge consist of two game drives, one in the early morning and one in the evening, through the Zululand Rhino Reserve. Guided by a knowledgeable ranger, guests have the chance to encounter some of the many animals and birds that can be found in this part of southern Africa. All children over the age of 3 years old are welcome to join in on game drives but bear in mind that children with short attention spans and high energy levels may find a three-hour game drive challenging.

What to eat?

It’s no secret that most kids are fussy eaters and will turn their noses up at anything green or unfamiliar. Rhino River Lodge’s restaurant menu ranges from hearty South African dishes, to the more basic ‘kid-friendly’ options like chicken burgers, toasted sandwiches and pizza, ensuring the lodge is a tantrum-free zone. Keeping the homely feel alive, all the meals are prepared with lots of love and fresh, local ingredients, and served under the stars around a campfire.
